With Halloween, October is the most popular month for costume parties. I have performed at Halloween themed weddings, birthday parties, and business grand openings. In fact, I just got back home from performing for a Moroccan “witches” Halloween party. I coordinated a black costume with flame colored silk veils to match the mood of the party. The blend of Moroccan, Halloween, and witch themes looked great and was very creative.
On the way home, I started thinking of party themes and how much a theme adds to the fun of an event. 90% of the parties I perform for are Arabian Nights or Moroccan themed. 5% of the parties are Halloween themed, 4% have no theme or are birthday parties for husbands, dads, or sons, and 1% have unexpected themes that make for really fun events.
Belly dancers can be incorporated into many party themes. Working with a professional belly dancer will ensure that any modification to dance style, music, or costuming will result in a well organized and professional performance designed to fit your theme. Here are 5 unexpected themes that I have encountered when belly dancing for parties.
1. Under the Sea / Luau / Nautical / Pirate / Island themed parties
Hula dancers may be expected, but surprise your guests with a belly dancing mermaid at your next party! Throw a nautical themed 50th birthday extravaganza or an Under the Sea dinner party. The performance can give a great underwater impression with the right music, flowing movements, blue light, and, of course, a mermaid costume.
2. Jungle / Wild Cats / Safari / Caveman themed parties
Most professional belly dancers have at least one animal print costume in her collection (see first photo). Pair a leopard or tiger print costume with heavy drum influenced belly dance music for an exciting and exotic “purrr”formance. Welcome to the jungle!
3. Futuristic / Robot / Sci-Fi / Matrix themed parties
By accenting the belly dance style with more body isolations and adding in modern dance influences, your average dancer can transform into a bionic belly dancer or laser-toting futuristic femme fatale warrior. Make sure you have great speakers to get the full effect of the pulsing techno beats and deep bass space sound effects. Set phasers to stunning.
4. TV-Land / Movie / Literature themed parties
A TV-Land themed party featuring an “I Dream of Jeanie” belly dance performance would be an obvious example here, but what about a Victorian themed party featuring entertainment right out of the pages of Oscar Wilde’s Salome? Belly dance is an ancient art and has been present through centuries of story-telling making it a perfect entertainment for any time period-themed party.
5. Circus / Cabaret / Vaudeville
Popcorn, clowns, acrobats, stilt walkers, and belly dancers. You may not have enough room in your backyard for a tight rope and your ceiling might not be high enough for a stilt walker, but a belly dance show is perfectly achievable. Be sure to hire a belly dancer that can balance one or two swords (at least) to get the maximum circus effect. She may not agree to wear a beard for the show, but a costume of old coins and a full skirt will compete the circus look. Everyone loves a circus!
