Troupe Kanz al Sahara is an actively performing belly dance troupe based in Davis, CA. Come join us and sparkle on stage!
Whether you want to perform belly dance professionally or just for fun, this class will give you the tools and performance experience you need to bring your belly dancing to the next level! In each session, you will earn a new belly dance routine that you can add to your dance repertoire.
Previous topics have included modern Oriental style, veil and drum solo. Future topics in no particular order will include sword work*, Raks Assaya (cane*), Shaabi, Saiidi, Pharaonic, Haggala, Turkish Romani and Oryantal, taqasim, double veil*/Isis wings*, balady, Bollywood style belly dance, and belly dance improvization.
The first half of the lesson is devoted to warming up and learning the history, steps and style that will be applied to the choreography taught in the second half of class. Besides learning how to interact with music, choreography will show you how various dance movements can be put together to form a specific belly dance style.
After all of your hard work learning the different belly dance routines, you will have the opportunity** to perform with the Fiesta DanceN’ Fitness student belly dance troupe, Kanz al Sahara*** at local events in Davis and Sacramento, belly dance festivals in the San Francisco Bay Area and professional shows****!
Becoming a professional belly dancer takes a lot of hard work, dedication and years of training. Every dancer has her/his own belly dance goals and learning pace. In addition to learning the routines needed to put together your own shows, Nyla will provide insight from her experience as a professional belly dancer on topics such as stage presence, emoting, costuming/make up/hair, reading and responding to your audience, cultural faux pas and back up/recovery plans for when dance conditions become less than ideal.
*Various props will be used in this class such as veils, swords, canes, zills, etc. While the student is under no obligation to purchase the prop and can chose to use “imaginary props”, no props will be provided by the instructor. If the student wishes to work with an actual prop, it is the student’s responsibility to purchase the featured prop either from a list of recommended vendors or a class wholesale order.
**Public performance is not for everyone. If you wish to take the choreography class for fun and personal enrichment, that is perfectly fine.
***Kanz al Sahara is a benevolent dictatorship lead by Nyla. Attempts will be made to accommodate all troupe member’s needs/wishes, but final decision-making authority rests with Nyla.
****Troupe members interested in public performances will be responsible for providing all needed props and costume pieces. Members must demonstrate competency in a routine before performing that routine, as well as attend at least 3 classes in the 4 weeks leading up to a show or gig (barring major emergencies).
There will also be opportunities to perform with the belly dance troupe Kanz al Sahara at world dance festivals in Davis, Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area!
